SNAP Program at the Berkeley Springs Farmers Market

In 2013, MCAFF initiated a program to allow individuals and families that participate in USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). With financial assistance from the WV Department of Health and Human Resources MCAFF was able to obtain the wireless equipment to operate a terminal at the Berkeley Springs Farmers Market that processes SNAP cards (from any state), as well as regular bank-issued debit cards.
We created a Matching Coupons incentive to attract SNAP customers to try the fresh, locally produced items at the Market. The program has now been running for 3 years, and we still offer matching coupons, up to $25 charged to a customer’s SNAP card. This greatly expands their purchasing power for fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, and meat available at the Market.
